IELTS Booking, One Skill Retake and Preparation Plan
This guide explains IELTS booking checks, the official One Skill Retake conditions, score planning and a practical preparation routine using IELTS practice tests.
IELTS measures Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training use the same Listening and Speaking tests, while Reading and Writing serve different purposes and use different materials. IELTS UKVI and Life Skills are separate products with their own requirements.
IELTS booking checklist
- Confirm the IELTS product required by the organisation receiving your result.
- Check whether Academic or General Training is required.
- Make sure the name and other account details match the identification document used on test day.
- Review the available centre, date, delivery mode, local time and any accommodation process.
- Plan for result release and result delivery before your application deadline.
What is IELTS One Skill Retake?
IELTS One Skill Retake allows an eligible candidate to retake one skill instead of taking the complete four-skills test again. The retake must be completed within 60 days of the original full IELTS test, and it can be used once for each original test.
One Skill Retake is available through official IELTS test centres, but availability can vary by location and test centre. Check the current local offering before booking.
Important acceptance and timing checks
Receiving organisations are not required to accept One Skill Retake. Before booking, ask the university, professional body or immigration authority whether it accepts the result for your specific application and whether it sets minimum scores for individual skills.
Official IELTS information states that One Skill Retake results are received within 3–5 days. This does not remove the need to allow extra time for sending or verifying results, so avoid scheduling the retake immediately before an application deadline.
How to prepare for IELTS
- Use Academic Reading and Writing materials only when Academic IELTS is required; use General Training materials when that product is required.
- Practise Listening and Speaking regularly because these skills are shared across Academic and General Training.
- Complete full practice tests under timed conditions and review errors after each attempt.
- If you plan to use One Skill Retake, identify the skill that needs improvement before booking.
- Practise the computer-delivered experience when your selected centre uses computer delivery.
- Keep a written schedule that includes the original test, possible retake, result release and result delivery.

- Leaving no time for result release or delivery.
- Preparing with the wrong Reading and Writing materials.
